TODAY IN HISTORY: MANCHESTER UNITED EASED PASSED ARSENAL

8 years ago today Manchester United defeated Arsenal 8-2 at the Old Trafford, making Arsenal worst defeat since 1896.
This was a response to Manchester City thumping past Spurs 5-1, taking the top of the league from their next door neighbour Manchester United.
Danny Welbeck opened the goal gallery in the 22nd minutes with a fantastic header past Wojciech Szczesny. Some minutes later United goal keeper David De gea saved a penalty from Robin Van Persie.
Manchester United ensured Arsenal were punished even more when Ashley Young added another goal in the 28th minute finding space just outside the 18 box area and curled a perfect finish high beyond Szczesny's grasp at the Stretford End.
Welbeck was subbed off due to an hamstring injury, but there was no respite for Arsenal as Rooney worked a free-kick routine with Young to send a 20-yard free-kick into the top corner in the 41st minute to score his second goal of the game as the end of first half approached.
Walcott broke off United's momentum when he took advantage of slack marking to shoot beneath De Gea in first-half injury time at the 45th minute to end the first half as 3-1.
There was little change in the second half as Arsenal were torn apart with lots of goals, near misses and saves from the exposed Szczesny.
Arsenal held on until the 64th minute when they were broken by another piece of Rooney creation at a set-piece, again linking with Young before dispatching the finish past the motionless Arsenal keeper.
This was a breakdown for Arsenal as the were been rushed at by United.  Rooney made an assist to Nani with the pass that gave the Portuguese the opportunity to send a wonderfully  chipped finish over Szczesny for United's fifth in the 6th minute.
With the Gunners in disarray, Park was subbed on, then in the 70th minute he lashing home an beautiful finish to get the red Devils 6th goal of the game before Van Persie briefly interrupted the one-way flow towards Arsenal's goal by beating De Gea just 4 minute apart from Park’s goal to get their second.
It seems things couldn’t worse for Arsenal at this stage, but the suffering  increased when Jenkinson was sent off after receiving his second yellow card for fouling Javier Hernandez as he raced clear.
Rooney completed his thrilling treble with a penalty eight minutes from time after Walcott fouled Patrice Evra as he gets his 6th career hatrick.
And United completed the scoring with their eighth in injury time, Young once again showing his eye for the spectacular with another curling shot.
Wenger cut a despairing figure as he walked back to the dressing room at the final whistle after one of the darkest days of his career.
