Coupes de l’independence is a league – cup tournament that is played by ten teams in Bénin’s top division league. The ten teams that plays the league – cup tournament are the top ten team from the previous season.
Because the first round of the tournament include all ten teams playing and resulting to five winners, one of the side that lost will advance to the next round of the tournament in other to have an even number of teams in the tournament, the losing side that advances to the next round is known as the “THE LUCKY LOSER”.  Universitè National de Bénin (UNB) was the lucky loser.

On 22 June 2004, Universitè National de Bénin lost 1-2 to Jeunesse Sportive de Pobè in the first round of the tournament, they also lost their second match to ASJA FC In a penalty shoot out that ended 4-5, again also advancing as the lucky loser to the semi finals, there UNB won their first match of the tournament beating Soleil FC 2-1 in extra time.
In the final UNB met ASJA again but this time UNB won the match with a 17 minute goal from Paul Koyaya. This win made them the only team in history to win a cup tournament after two losses in the knockout stage. Because of this they’re known as the Lucky Loser.
